VolunteeringFrequently Asked QuestionsI would like to volunteer to help the Club? How do I go about it? It is impossible for the Club to operate without the help of volunteers. As well as the jobs involved with running the championships and galas (see below) we always need help with various other administrative and practical tasks. Some of these are ‘one offs’ some are on an ongoing basis. Please speak to anyone on the Committee – full details are available here if you are logged on - or on the Club notice board at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre - or feel free to chat to any of the more long standing Club parents. How much time will I need to give? As little or as much as you feel you can. See the list of volunteering jobs below which details what is involved. Do I need to have any qualifications/training/technical knowledge of swimming? None at all. However, if you decide to become more involved, the Club can arrange for you to take courses for judging and time keeping. Do I need any special equipment? No. If you offer to do time keeping the Club has a supply of stop watches and there are always experienced timekeepers on hand to help you out. Do I need to have been at the Club any particular length of time? Absolutely not! Volunteering is always a good way of getting to know the swimmers and other parents. Do I need to have a CRB check? Checks are required for certain roles but you do not need to have been CRB checked to volunteer. Volunteering JobsAnnouncer – Reads out safety announcements prior to gala and theen announces each race and any other information as directed by the referee. Poolside Job. Timekeepers – Time how long an individual swimmer or group of swimmers (if a relay) take(s) to complete an event. At least one timekeeper per lane. This is not a difficult job. The Club supplies stopwatches and if you’re not used to using one somebody with experience will be happy to show you what to do. Poolside Job. Split Timekeepers – Time how long an individual swimmer takes to complete his/her leg of a relay race. Poolside Job. Door – Sign In/Registration – For certain Galas, including Club Champs, swimmers need to register that they have turned up to swim. Minimum of two people required, one to sign in boy swimmers and another the girls. Refreshments – To make up refreshments and 3 or 4 times during the competition take them round to all the poolside officials and volunteers – not the swimmers. Squash, cups, trays etc provided by the Club. Usually more than one person. Poolside Job. Marshals – To make sure swimmers know what and when they are swimming (from lists provided) and guide them towards the starting blocks at the appropriate time. Poolside Job.
