Frequently Asked Questions

What sources of information are there about the running of the Club?

  • The Club notice board at the Leisure Centre shows a lot of information, including contact details for committee members.
  • Speak to committee members/coaches/other parents.
  • Check further through this website – we’ve tried to give as much information as possible here. Click here for details of Officials.

Is swimming on every week?

Swimming is typically run every week throughout the year. In exceptional circumstances Club Night (Thursday) swimming might be cancelled, in which case there will be a bulk email sent out, it will be posted on the website and if you miss both of these there will be a sign at the Leisure Centre. During school holidays other sessions may be changed according to the availability of the pools. Any changes will be advised as above.

What is Club Night?

All Club members are required to swim on Thursdays night. There are 5 differing ability sessions, starting at 5.45pm. For full details of session times please click here

How do I get my name on the email distribution list?

Send an e mail to Jill Stephens who is club email co-ordinator

I am keen to know how my child is getting on and when they might be moved up to the next session.

First port of call is to speak to your child’s coach. You should try to speak to them as they arrive or in between sessions. It’s not practical to speak to them whilst they are coaching poolside. Children are moved up to a different lane within their session, or to the next session, to swim with others of a similar ability. This happens when there is space available, they have reached the required standard and have shown commitment to swimming.

Are the Club championships in November/December open to all?

Absolutely – it is a fantastic chance for swimmers to gain competition experience and benchmark their swimming. As a Club we are keen to see as many children as possible taking part. Even the youngest swimmers are encouraged to take part – swimming 25meters (1 length). There is a complete range of events catering for all ages and abilities.

In addition, the Club organises a Junior Gala in the summer , which is aimed at the younger and less experienced swimmers, and the Shoals ‘fun’ gala – an event not to be missed!

What is a PB?

  • ‘Personal Best’ times become very important for the children as they improve.
  • They are obviously a good way to gauge their progress. We send out a list of all of their PBs when the annual renewal notices go out in September.
  • The Club runs Time Trials throughout the year and these give swimmers a chance to compete in all strokes at varying distances and achieve new times.
  • Details of all swimmers’ times from Club champs, Time Trials and all Galas are posted on the Club notice board and on the website

What galas and competitions other than the club champs and time trials could my child swim in?

  • Members may opt to compete in many ‘open’ galas or ‘meets’. Full details of the dates and locations of these will be e mailed to you throughout the year and you can talk to your child’s coach about which events to enter. Other more experienced Club parents will also be happy to share their knowledge with you.
  • The Club enters teams, selected by the coaches, in the Tudor League, Kent Junior League, National Speedo League and various ‘Trophy’ galas. These cover all ages and abilities. If your child is selected you should receive an e mail with details, but the coaches also post team selections on the Club notice board.
  • As they improve, swimmers could look to gain qualifying times to compete in the Kent champs in February, the Regional champs in May and ultimately the National Champs in Sheffield in July.

Where can I buy Club kit?

We hope that shortly we will have an on line ordering facility. In the meantime kit is on sale at the Leisure Centre at least one Thursday in each month. Please check the notice board for details. Orders for other Club kit, like track suits and shorts, are placed with our suppliers regularly throughout the year and more details are available here

What social events does the Club run?

There are two major events in the year. The annual awards presentation evening is in January, usually at Wally Hall and is followed by a disco, which the children love. We also run a summer BBQ at St Julians, in June. Information about all of these will be found on the website and notice board.
