Sevenoaks Swimmers make splash in Open Water events - 01-09-2009A number of Sevenoaks Swimming Club swimmers have been taking part in Open Water competitions. Niki NcDonald won Gold in the Senior Ladies Event in last week’s Brighton Pier to Pier competition, swimming 1056 metres against the current in a time of 24 mintues, 28 seconds, while Nigel Robson finished 4th in the Veteran Men’s Event in a time of 28 minutes, 34. Overall Niki is now second place in the 17-24 category (and 4th place overall) of the ASA SER 200 Open Water Championship Series after 4 of 6 events. Nigel is 3rd in the 35-44 years category. In the Team Outrageous Open Water Event at Leybourne Lakes at the weekend, 12 year old Maddy Smith won the 1500 meter event in a blistering 20m38s, beating all other male and female competitors of all ages, while Nigel Robson brought in 2nd place in 22.58. This was Maddy’s first open water race, having swum in a lake for the first time just two weeks before. As team manager Nigel Robson commented, ‘this was a very impressive swim, especially for a novice, not only because she swam fast, but also because she mastered sighting so quickly, ensuring she was able to swim accurately from buoy to buoy around the lake, and without anyone to follow as she led from start to finish.’ Earlier in the day, Nigel had already swum the 800m event, coming in in first position, while he later took an impressive 5th in the 4000m, completing an impressive day’s competition. Open water swimming has benefitted from a raised profile following its inclusion as an Olympic Event in Beijing 2008, where David Davis won Silver and Keri-Anne Payne and Cassie Patten took silver and bronze medals for GB. more news articles... | ![]() NoticeboardSunday, 5th Feb Training: The Sennocke Centre is open so all training is on, although there is no dry land session for Silver There will be no swimming at Combe Bank on Monday 13th Feb due to half term. ![]() |
