Sevenoaks Swimmers at First Individual Nationals - 01-09-2008 On Friday 1st August two Sevenoaks boys ventured North to Sheffield to take part in their first individual events at the annual ASA National Youth Swimming Championships.
Xander Alari-Williams and James Manning had qualified for the 100m breastroke and 50m freestyle respectively and were really looking forward to taking part, having been part of the relay team that qualified to swim in the Age Group Nationals in 2007 and experiencing the fantastic atmosphere and excitement of being in the top 20% of swimmers in the whole country. 15 year old James swam extremely well, with a long course PB of 26.07 in the 15/16 year event, putting him 118th overall from ages 18 to 15 years. Xander, also 15 years old, swam superbly in his heats with a 1 second PB of 1.9.10 , this was enough to secure him a place in the 15/16 year semi-final where he again exceeded expectation with a 1.8.84. Amid huge excitement and two hoarse coaches, this qualified him for the final the following day. Plenty of carbohydrates and rest overnight and he was raring to swim in his first ever National Final, he again produced a PB of 1.8.83 and came in 10th place, in the double age group. This time puts him as the 3rd fastest in his 1993 age group in the whole country and he is also ranked 3rd with his short course time which is now slower than his long course time, a most unusual situation!! Sunday, 5th Feb Training: The Sennocke Centre is open so all training is on, although there is no dry land session for Silver There will be no swimming at Combe Bank on Monday 13th Feb due to half term.
