Sevenoaks Junior Gala - 30-06-2010Sevenoaks Junior Swimmers just miss out at home gala
A group of relatively inexperienced Sevenoaks Swimming Club swimmers put in some great performances in the recent Maritime Trophy Gala held at Sevenoaks Leisure Centre. The team held second place through most of the gala shadowing eventual winners Beacon, before being edged into third place in the last event by Edenbridge. The Girls’ Relay Teams put in a string of strong performances, with first places for the 9 years and 12 years age groups in both the Medley and Freestyle Relays, whilst the 10 years team achieved second place in both events. The 11 year girls also did very well and achieved a first place in the Medley Relay. The Boys’ Relay Teams had a torrid time with three disqualifications, which more race experience should help to avoid. In individual events the girls not only achieved excellent placings in several of their events but also some astonishing personal best times. Nine year old Lucy Meakin achieved first in the 25 metre fly and in the 10 years age group Elizabeth Coveney knocked 8 seconds off her previous personal best in the 50 metre breast-stroke gaining second Place. There was a powerful swim from Victoria Robson who secured first place in the 11 years group in the 50 m freestyle whilst Sophie Alcock achieved a new personal best for her 50 m fly of 40.82 seconds and a second place in the same age group. In the Girls’ 12 year age group Georgina Powell knocked nearly 4 seconds off her best time for 50 m breast-stroke in a time of 44.48 seconds and came first, whilst Katerin Chrysostomou picked up first place in the 12 year 50m backstroke, following that with 10 seconds off her previous best time in the 50 m fly with a time of 43.07 seconds, putting her in second place. The lack of 12 year old boys to swim placed the team at a disadvantage, with two 11 year olds having to swim up a year. Most of the 10 year Boys team were new to competition, as were all of the 9 year old boys. However they did well and showed promise for the future. Final results were : Beacon first with 207 points, Edenbridge 196, Sevenoaks third with 194, Tonbirdge 131, Tandridge 126, and 1066 with 99 points.
