SSC win the Chris Bassi Memorial Trophy - 21-09-2009Congratulations to the team that won the Chris Bassi Memorial Trophy on Saturday night at RTW Monson.
Five teams took part in the competition, although the race for first place was only ever between Sevenoaks and the host club, RTW Monson, who finished one-two in the majority of races throughout the evening. During the evening, Sevenoaks had notable wins by breaststroker Zoe Harding, James McAuliffe and Leandre Stevens in 100m butterfly, Jacob Stableton in 100 backstroke, Joe Choong in 100m butterfly, and Xander Alari-Williams and Angus Wyatt in 100m breaststroke. There were an equally impressive number of second place swims: Niki McDonald, Ellen Benn, Hamish Johnstone, Hamish Wyatt, Laura Phillips, Susannah Kitto, Sam Meakin, Lucy Pigott, Hugo Caven, Rebecca Pearce, Cecelia Fenner, Alex Tucker, Emily Cast, Katie Lobley and Emily Monkhouse and won the Club crucial points as the point score between Monson and ourselves was so close throughout the night. Particularly strong was Fred Biggs who had swum a number of impressive races at the Brighton Open Meet earlier in the day, before travelling to Tunbridge Wells to seal an excellent individual freestyle victory. As a Club, we also showed our strength in depth, winning well over half the relay events, with notably performances by the 9-11 and under 13 girls teams, as well as under 13 and open men’s teams, James Manning leading out the team to a decisive victory in the final team event of the evening. Team captains James Manning and Niki McDonald led by example throughout the night, with some strong individual and team swims. It is good to see that, as a team, we were driven by the noise of own own supporters which is so important in tight races.
Coach Julian Metcalf was pleased with the overall result: ‘The final points make the win seem easier than it was. However, we had some strong swims, with a number of younger swimmers competing out of their age group. They met the challenge of this with great determination and I thought we showed impressive team spirit and commitment throughout. 'However, it is also important that we work to sharpen up our starts, turns and finishes before the Club Championships and the Speedo league. On behalf of the swimmers, thanks go to the team managers (Jane McDonald, Ann Walkley, Janet Benn, Tina Fenner, Geri Tucker and Don Johnstone) and the parents supporting in the balcony. Final scores: Sevenoaks 260 points, RTW Mondon 245, Ashford 178, Tonbridge 136 and Tandridge 106 points.
