Kent County Championships - 16-02-2010

Kent County Championships

Sevenoaks Swimming Club achieved a record haul of medals and personal best times on the opening two days of this year’s Kent County Swimming Championships at the weekend.

The Club’s swimmers were on medal winning form from the start and the Club quickly showed its considerable strength and depth in winning medals in three out of the four senior relay events: the ladies team taking bronze in the 100 freestyle event with commanding swims from Natasha and Sarah Hickey, Holly Miles and Gabby Norris. The Mens’ medley and freestyle teams were anchored by James Manning and Joe Choong, joined by Xander Alari-Williams, Jacob Stapleton, James Macauliffe and Eliott Neale.

There were also wide ranging successes in the individual events. Patrick Ham’s commitment in training was rewarded by a gold medal in the 50 breaststroke, silver in the 400 Individual medley and bronze in the 200 breaststroke, all swum in Personal Best times.

National swimmer Alari-Williams, building on his successful swims at the Burns Open Meet in Sheffield the previous weekend, took gold in the Senior and Junior 50m breaststroke, silver in the 200 Individual Medley and bronze in the 100m butterfly.
Joe Choong stormed to gold in the 50 freestyle while Club Captain James Manning, another National level swimmer, finished with bronze in the senior event, narrowly outside this year’s national qualifying time.

Other notable swims came from Emily Cast and Caroline Gloyne who took a bronze and silver each in the 50 and 100m butterfly, while outstanding performances from Hamish Wyatt resulted in gold in the 200 breaststroke and bronze in the 50m event.

Other top three medals went to Nathan Marsh (silver in 100m butterfly) and Emily Lobley (bronze in 100m breaststroke).  Alex Macauley, Fred Biggs and Joe Choong also won medals in the 100m backstroke events.

A large number of Sevenoaks swimmers also achieved top 6 finalist placings, including AJ Airey (in 50 and 200 backstroke events), Rebecca Pearce (50m butterfly), Alex Robbins (100m backstroke), Katie Lobley (200m breaststroke) and Jacob Stapleton (200 freestyle)

Personal best swims were also achieved by William Luckham-Down, Andrew Jessop,  Polly Martin, Ellen Williamson, Holly Miles, Ford Curran, Cecelia Fenner, Maddy Smith, Lindsey Sawyer, Wesley Whiting,  Lauren Goodchild, Emily Skinner, Tom Hordle, Carmen King, Leandre Stevens, Alex Tucker, James Macauliffe, Sarah Hickey and club captain Natasha Hickey.

Club Coaches Julian Metcalf and Jo King were delighted with the results. ‘We have over 60 swimmers who have qualified for this year’s championships which is just fantastic! And to have so many outstanding swims in the opening weekend really gets this year’s event off with momentum - not least with everyone recording new personal best times.’
